We greatly appreciate the works of James A. Duke, Ph.D., which is one of our primary sources of information. Dr. Duke is an ethnobotanist who spent many years working for the USDA. He roamed all over the world, studying medicinal plants and how they were used by the different cultures. He has seen first-hand how people use these herbs, and has used many of these medicinal remedies himself. As a result of his travels, his research, and his experience, he has come to believe that in most cases the whole herb approach is better than the pharmaceutical approach. Drug companies, in order to be able to patent their products, prefer isolating specific chemicals and compounds within the plants, then use only the parts they consider important to make their medicine. The holistic approach recognizes that more often than not, there are other properties within the plants that work together with the compounds that are known to be helpful, which when used together may be more effective and give better balanced results than when the compounds
are isolated. This bears out with our belief that God created the plants just the way they needed to be to serve the purpose they were intended for.

Even in the business of holistic herbal medicine, there are many that fill their vats only 10% to 30% of the way with herbal raw material. We fill
our vats all the way to the top, just barely covering the herbs with the liquids, to get a ratio of 1:1.

We have been making herbal formulas for 15 years. I use these same formulas for myself and for my family, so we take quality very seriously.

Arnica

 Arnica Montana

What it is:
This is a 2 ounce bottle (with a dropper) of Arnica tincture, made from the flowers of the arnica montana plant. This tincture is diffused in vodka (about 50% alcohol by volume). Arnica is known in some places as mountain daisy.

What it does:
Arnica tincture is our favorite go-to for bruises, swelling, joint pain, and muscle soreness (not to take the place of ice packs, but works well in conjunction with them). It is amazing on bruises! For children as well as adults. The sooner you can apply it, the better. Arnica is well known for its ability to speed healing of sprains, strains, etc. It can be put on areas of trauma after falls, accidents, etc. It can also be used for arthritis, insect bites, chapped lips, and acne. It has pain-relieving, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is our treatment of choice for mouth sores (cold sores), sore throat, and our favorite antiseptic/pain-reliever after the removal of teeth because of the quick relief and its healing effects.

While it is quite safe in and around the mouth and throat, we do caution against using it internally, except in very measured doses and only under the care of a medical professional.

How to use it:
For bumps and bruises, we just apply on the affected area with the provided dropper and pat/spread it by hand until the whole affected area is covered. The alcohol evaporates quickly, so it is fast-drying and leaves no oil or mess.

Caution: The tincture will cause yellow stains on clothing and bedding, so take necessary precautions.

For soreness and muscle aches and pains, apply directly on skin as mentioned above, then cover with a cloth dipped in hot water and wrung out. If prolonged treatment is desired, cover the cloth with plastic wrap, then top it off with a towel. This makes a very effective hot compress. Do NOT use the hot compress on bruises or swelling!

We are in no position to tell you what is wrong with you, nor to tell you what would be good for you. If you have any condition that needs medical attention, you should see a doctor. Herbal and nutritional supplements do not produce the exact same results in every individual, therefore we can make no guarantees. Of course, this is also true of modern pharmaceutical medicine, which is why doctors sometimes keep changing the prescriptions in search of one that works for that particular patient. It is, after all, called "practicing" medicine! How safe are herbal medicines? People have used them for thousands of years, and continue to do so because they work! It is very important to follow directions and to heed any warnings associated with natural remedies. People have even died from eating strawberries or peanuts! So far, we have the right and the freedom to make our own choices when it comes to food and medicine. May it ever remain so!
